... Traditional patchwork quilt ...
...Old-fashioned sweetness ...
Old Fashioned Pastel Patchwork Quilt
Unrolling a Little Stars jelly roll from Connecting Threads revealed a few pastels mixed in with mostly dark, primitive colors which did not coordinate with the light fabrics at all.  So I pulled out the pastel strips, 14 in all since I had two jelly rolls, and looked for a pattern that used that few strips in the quilt books on my shelf.

Quilts Made with Love had a pattern that would work with so few jelly roll strips.  I began making the quilt and realized I had enough strips leftover to fill some of the white space in the pattern, and thus the strip blocks were made in place of the mostly white blocks with a few colored squares.

I really don't care much for the colors myself, but I do love the old-fashioned look of yesteryear with the simple pattern and simple fabrics.  My daughter, Millie, told me she thought it was "beautiful!" which encouraged me to press through and finish it.  She repeated this to me several times and said it again when she saw it finished.  Thank you, sweetheart!

Most quilts have a definite repeat to the block layout so they look finished on all edges ... this isn't one of those quilts.  The layout forced me to step out of my narrow-minded thinking, because to me, this quilt looks unfinished on the top and right sides.  Perhaps the continuous yellow binding {as opposed to scrappy binding} finishes it off nicely and gives it continuity.

True to my fabric-buying moratorium, this quilt was made entirely from my stash, backing and all.  The backing is leftover from a custom lap-sized 30s Barn Raising I made earlier this year.

Millie is correct, it really is beautiful. As much as I admire the 'designer / intricate' quilts, I really do still love simple best. I might have initially had the same 'unfinished' feeling if I'd been the one making it, but as a 'consumer' it looks just fine! :-)

I agree with your daughter, it's beautiful. I've been looking at Connecting Threads fabric, how did you find the quality?

Your daughter is absolutely right - it's lovely. So old-timey and perfect! It's good to step out of our comfort zones with quilting. Gosh, when I think about the first quilts I made compared to now, I can't believe the transformation.

There is just something wonderful about pastel quilts. I love watching the movie Little Women and seeing the gorgeous, pretty and pastel quilts! I have yet to make a finished pastel quilt and I think seeing yours is an inspiration to want one! I had to add finished when I am remember I do have a pink one hanging in the closet waiting to be finished! I love the yellow and white stripe binding!
