Welcome to the Book Hop!

If this is your first time here, having stopped by because of Cheryl's Book Hop, or if you're a previous reader, welcome to all of you!  I'm Myra, and Busy Hands Quilts is where I share my quilting love with you.  Busy Hands Quilts has sponsored Cheryl's mystery quilt alongs for a number of years, and I'm happy to have been invited to make a quilt for her Book Hop.  :)

I'd love it if you'd subscribe to my newsletter where I spoil my readers with subscriber-only Pattern Sales, Giveaways, Tips and Tricks, as well as amazing fabric deals I find around the web.  I also share links to shops that have made quilt kits in my patterns.  You'll even receive a free quilt pattern right off the bat!

Goose in the Pond Quilt Pattern

The Goose in the Pond quilt pattern in the Just One Charm Pack Quilts Book is a charm pack quilt with two background fabrics.  My version uses four other fabrics (two different polka dots for the background, a solid red border, and a navy polka dot border).  I do love me some polka dots, yes'm!  The design in the book has four blocks set 2x2 with sashed blocks and a single border, but because I was making the quilt for a specific blank wall in my house, I made three blocks and laid them out in a single row and then added borders to get it to the size needed to fill the space.  This pattern is easy to adapt to other sizes - just make more or less blocks and adjust sashing/border lengths.

The Just One Charm Pack Quilts Book

This beautiful book includes 18 projects that use just one charm pack and two additional yardage fabrics.  Each quilt is shown in two different colorways to help get your creative juices flowing to create a quilt that reflects your personal style.  The quilts are baby size through small lap size, are very beginner friendly, and are traditionally pieced (no applique or paper piecing).  This is my kind of book!  :)  You can get a signed copy of the book right here.

If you're like me and don't collect charm packs, the patterns work really well with scraps from your stash.  As an added bonus, the book teaches you how to create your own charm packs.

Strip that Goose!

I ♥ strip piecing and include it where ever possible in my quilt patterns, so I was delighted to see strip piecing in the Goose in the Pond pattern.

And yes, I did know that the background of the white/red polka dot is creamier than the background of the white/blue polka dot fabric and used it anyway.  Go rogue, step out of the box, and don't worry about being so matchy-matchy - it's very freeing!!

Have I told you the story about the lady in purple?  A friend of mine wore four different shades of purple together in her outfit - think blouse, sweater, skirt, scarf; all four a different shade of purple.  I would never have put the outfit together myself, but she was beautiful in it.  Absolutely beautiful.  That day I learned that it's okay to step out of the matchy-matchy box and just let it all blend together.  Her inner beauty is what shined through her blend of purple clothing.  :)

So creamy and bright whites unite!

The Red, White, and Blue!

Since I was making this quilt to hang on a wall in the dining room (my husband told me I needed to hang one there, can you imagine?!?), I wanted to use red, white, and blue to tie the red/white dining room in with the navy/white in the adjacent living room.  In my stash was a perfect layer cake of Land of Liberty by Riley Blake.  The HSTs in the blocks are made from a layer cake of this fabric collection.  You'll find it on Etsy right here and at Fat Quarter Shop right here.  I love this collection so much!  Florals, ginghams, pinwheels, stars; so much goodness in bright and happy red and navy with both crisp and creamy whites!

Eeeek!  Friends, when I went to search this fabric on Etsy, look what I found!!!  A flag panel in the collection!  I am smitten and will be buying one as soon as I finish up this blog post.  Here it is!  Isn't it beautiful?!  You will find this panel right here.

Okay, back up the rabbit hole and back to the Goose in the Pond!  I didn't mean to get distracted!  :}

Longarm Quilting

This quilting design is Posies, quilted in white thread on my Handi Quilter Fusion with ProStitcher.  I quilted two quilts at a time (one right after the other on the same piece of backing), and I will be sharing the second quilt on a future day in the Just One Charm Pack Quilts Book Hop.

This quilt is quilted with a single layer of batting since it is intended to be used as a wall hanging.  When I make table runners for use on the dining table, I add an extra layer of heat-resistant batting on top of a layer of cotton.  This way I don't have to cover up the pretty table runner with hot pads under dishes that are warm, though I wouldn't trust this batting with a hot cast iron pan.  You know I serve food in the pans all the time, of course.

Don't Forget the Binding!

Because every binding needs it's dog day, I've begun taking pictures of the quilt folded to highlight the binding.  It's a super important part of a quilt and often adds a finishing pop to a quilt, so it needs a well deserved salute.

And yes, I do know that the red polka dot binding doesn't match the deeper reds in the quilt.  Tee hee.  Hmm, you wonder if that bothers her?  Nope!

Super cute runner or wall hanging Myra. I appreciate you pointing out the use of your creamy and bright whites together. I would shy away from doing that but you are so right. It works just fine! Really pretty finish.
