Formation Throw Quilt in Timber!

Today I'm sharing a Formation quilt - the Timber version.  I started this quilt several months ago and finally finished it up this week.

Formation is a fat quarter friendly quilt pattern with good-sized Flying Geese blocks so the quilt top goes together fairly fast.  This is a quick and easy quilt pattern that suits pretty much any color scheme, from manly to patriotic to modern to kid themes.

I made a similar version of this Formation quilt here.  That one is made with Moda Grunge Seeing Spots fabric in grays, browns, and a splash of green.

One of my sewists made a Formation quilt for the kits kitted by Connecting Threads here.

The Formation quilt pattern is available in the Busy Hands Quilt shop.

Sweetwater Timber Quilt Fabrics

The Timber fabric collection by Sweetwater for Moda Fabrics is featured in this quilt.  They are the perfect mix of camping-themed fabrics with tiny tents, gingham, tiny Xs, words, and stripes in the modern black, gray, mustard and green.

Because I had an entire fat quarter bundle to work with, I was able to cut a small piece from many fabrics, rather than cutting a larger number of pieces from less fabrics.  Each fabric then only appears four times in the quilt top.

The background is Basic Shades in Snow White by Riley Blake, a subtle tone-on-tone, not solid white; available here and here.

The Timber fabric collection is available here, here, and here.

Lots of Quilt Sizes

The Formation quilt pattern includes all of the sizes - 5 in all!  Fabric selection is quick and easy with fat quarters.

     Baby Quilt  45" x 45"  5 FQs

     Throw Quilt  63" x 72"  8 FQs

     Twin Bed Quilt  72" x 90"  13 FQs

     Queen Bed Quilt  90" x 104"  18 FQs

     King Bed Quilt 108" x 108"  23 FQs

With all of the sizes, this can be your go-to pattern for a quick quilt using your fat quarter stash!

Modern Quilt Design

Formation is a versatile modern quilt pattern that works with so many fabric collections, and better yet, whatever you have in your stash.

GUYS - This simple design is perfect for a guy quilt using fabric designs and colors that guys tend to like.

MODERN - Formation is perfect for modern decor too.  Maybe you are wanting to make a quilt for a modern couple and are looking for a simple design to suit them.  This design works perfectly with today's minimalist colors of tan, gray, and black, and a special color for a surprise pop!

KIDS - This would be a fun design for using kiddie fabric too, with a darker background since it will be used and loved and dragged around to make forts everywhere!

Flying Geese Quilt Blocks

Flying Geese quilt blocks can be tricky to trim without a specialty ruler.  I've tried and haven't had much success.  The flying geese trimmer I recommend for this pattern is the Wing Clipper, which is found here and here.  Other rulers may not be able to trim the size of flying geese quilt blocks that are made in Formation.

Longarm Quilting

This Formation quilt is quilted with Cultivar, a digital longarm quilting design, in bright white thread.  The design looks likes flames and seems to complement the tree-like quilt (if that's trees you see).  :)  The quilting was done on my HandiQuilter Fusion with ProStitcher.

Robert Kaufman Widescreen Wide Back

This Formation throw quilt is backed in a Robert Kaufman Widescreen wide back.  The color is gray.

Formation is finished off with a Widescreen black binding.  I used a leftover piece of backing from another quilt.

Both of these fabrics are wide backs that I regularly stock in The Wide Back Shop.

The Formation quilt pattern is available in the Busy Hands Quilt shop.

I really like this pattern and the Timber colourway. I highly recommend the Wing Clipper ruler for creating perfect Flying Geese blocks too :-)
