Alternative Gravity Quilt Fabric Ideas {A Guest Post!}

In preparation for the upcoming GRAVITY Quilt Along, Teresa from Quilting Is My Bliss is on the blog today to show us a GRAVITY quilt using prints and solids!  She created this amazing quilt as a pattern tester for Jaybird Quilts!

Hi Everyone, I'm Teresa Silva from Quilting Is My Bliss....I'm so happy to get to share my Gravity Quilt over here on Busy Hand Quilts hosted by Myra! I have been a longarm quilter for about 4 years and a quilter for about 25 years.  I love all aspects of quilting.

She asked me to tell the story about my Gravity Quilt and how it came together. It really is a crazy idea I had...Julie Herman of Jaybird Quilts made the most fabulous version of the Gravity Quilt in all solids. I loved her version but wanted to try something different.  I'm a huge fan of Tula Pink fabrics.  I knew I had to use some of her "Moonshine" fabric.  I was only hoping that this idea of adding prints to this quilt was not going to make it look like a "hot mess".  I used a fat quarter bundle of Moonshine instead of the 10 inch squares the pattern calls for.  I also used coordinating solids that I had in my stash. 

In order to keep the color ways similar to how Julie did in the original Gravity Quilt, I sorted all my fat quarters in order of color, grouping like colors and solids together.  This way I was able to use Julie's charts on her pattern for laying out the color.  Some of the colors are different but it still follows the same concept.  You will also notice that I changed the color order of the diamonds going out from the center star.  Julie's quilt had dark from the center going to light at the outer edges.  I switched mine from light center going to dark.  It helped to tone down all the prints I had used in the center. 

And then for the quilting....of course I'm lucky enough to own a longarm so I was able to quilt my own Gravity Quilt.  This quilt took me a good week and many hours to finish.  I usually don't spend this kind of time on my own quilts...but I knew this one was special!  I'm really glad I took the time! I quilted lots of straight lines, pebbles, and back and forth lines in the diamonds.  And in the center blocks I just took it one block at a time and quilted whatever came to my mind at the time.  No real plan. Now all I need to do is finish up the binding.  I'll save that for another day!

I sure hope you have as much fun making this Gravity Quilt by Jaybird Quilts as much as I did.  Thank you to Julie Herman for always coming up with new, fun patterns that are surprisingly easy to make with her rulers.  The Hex N More, Super Sidekick and Sidekick rulers.  This pattern is really very easy to piece with the concepts Julie uses.  When you cut out the pieces with her rulers you know it's going to go together well!  Make sure and follow her directions and press your seams open!  It is key to all of her patterns.  The blocks line up perfectly.  And your long arm quilter will love you!
