Island Batik Wonky Star Twin Quilt | Finished or Not Friday Linky Party!

Welcome to Finished {or Not!} Friday where you can share what you're working on and see what others have been making!

My Finish is a twin size wonky star quilt in beautiful batiks!  Island Batik Ambassadors are given monthly challenges for projects to create with batik fabrics, and December's challenge is whimsical or wonky.  I settled on wonky stars because I had the perfect 10" square stack and some coordinating yardage for the star centers, border and binding.

While wonky stars may look easy peasy, free from rules, I found that was not the case.  I had to rip out many star points because when I folded them back they did not cover the white square underneath.  My dimensional visual skills are apparently lacking, because I really struggled with this.

This could explain why I do not enjoy paper piecing; eyeballing whether a piece of fabric will cover the area it needs to is difficult for me even with folding it back and checking.  I breathed a sigh of relief when the stars were done - fortunately there were only 12!

Twice a year Island Batik Ambassadors are provided a HUGE box of fabrics to play around with and make the monthly challenges.  Some of the fabrics in this quilt were provided to me by Island Batik, and some I purchased myself.

Quilt Stats:

  1. Hi Myra! What a beautiful quilt finish for today. I have never made a wonky star anything only because I am a bit OCD (some may say more than a bit) and the points not being even and equal would drive me nuts. I just love the quilting pattern you chose for this quilt! The whole thing is gorgeous. Happy Happy Friday to you. ~smile~ Roseanne

  2. I can't do wonky straps, I am just too symmetrical! Well, I am not very evenly shaped, but my mind can't do wonky. LOL!

  4. Exactly my fear with this wondky project! I thought about stars, blocks, logs, hexies and can't make up my mind. Yours looks like you didn't struggle at all!

  5. It looks great. Sorry you had trouble with the wonky part. I think I've only ever made one wonky star. Great bright colours.

  7. Your quilt turned out beautiful! I love wonky everything. I am working on a wonky stars and bars bed runner for my daughter. I posted a tutorial for the way I make my wonky stars. There are a couple tricks but once you figure them out the rest is fun. https://bit.ly/2BZfY7V
