My Sewing Room!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

Here's my happy room where magic happens!  I have two windows with a view of our back pasture, lawn, and swimming pond with nary a neighbor in sight.

Here's my huge cutting table which my husband found for free on Craigslist.  I keep the sides dropped down because I don't have room to have them up.  My extra sewing machine and serger are stored underneath.

My husband made the shelves above, cutting them from rough wood.  I use a pair of scissors to snag the bins on the top shelf to get them down!  The bins on the shelves contain my current projects.  Yep, there are usually ten or so!  The bottom shelf is my catch-all spot, and I didn't clean it for you!  I use several timers to waken me out of my quilting reverie to get other stuff done.  I have been known to burn food and leave laundry in the dryer all day.

This bookshelf holds about 600 yards of my stash.  The other part is in my walk-in closet and is mostly precuts, leftover collections from previous projects, fabric for sewing clothes, batting, and whatnot.  I don't know how much yardage is in the closet, but it takes up about twice this space.  I find it really hard to break up collections even when they are scraps, and that only makes them more difficult to use, of course.  I'm working on changing this because it's quite ridiculous.

In January I went through my yardage and measured and folded it onto comic boards.  I originally placed them on their ends, but soon realized the shelves hold more when the fabrics are on their sides.  The fabrics on the narrow shelves are backings.  The bookcase is usually covered with a curtain on a tension rod to protect the fabric.

The top two shelves are my collections of Amy Butler, Jennifer Paganelli, and Joel Dewberry fabrics, not including the fat quarters by these designers stored in the closet.  My daughter painted the sign for me!

My husband made a thread rack for me a few years ago.

I found this sewing desk at the Habitat for Humanity, a secondhand store, for $40.  I love it!  It is so nice to have Mrs.Bernina inset into the table.  My grandmother bought her in 1976 for $750, and she sewed my grandpa navy blue polyester overalls for Sunday on it!  He wore his striped overalls every other day.  The back of the table folds down, but it is always up for more surface area.  There are plastic storage towers tucked underneath at the back.  The one on this side contains one drawer of solid 2-1/2" strips, a drawer of solid scraps and a drawer of Miss Kate precuts and yardage.

The plastic storage tower on this side contains a bit of everything; serger thread, binding scraps, and other misc. items, most of which is for sewing clothes which has been overtaken by quilting!  Also tucked back there are my design boards and spare cutting mat.

My husband made this sewing table for my birthday!  Do you remember the rose-colored laminate cupboards from the 90s?  This is one of those, remade with white paint and beadboard on the ends.  I had him put the overhang on the left to create a place to store more junk.  The ironing board top is 55" wide and 24" deep.  I love to iron yardage on it!  The two boxes hold more solid fabric, and the aqua basket holds yo-yo's.

This cupboard holds my AccuQuilt and dies.  I am looking forward to collecting more dies!  It's nice to have a spot for the distilled water and cup, too.

A drawer for thread cones and Triangles on a Roll.

A drawer for items I use most often when quilting.  I can easily reach it when sitting at the sewing machine.  I ♥ the magnetic bobbin holders.  Mrs.Singer, my quilting machine, is in the family room in the shop since there's no room in the house, and these holders make it so easy to keep track of the bobbins in the commute.

This storage cabinet gets the honor of holding the iron on top and my favorite fabric strips and scraps inside!

I'm making this mini quilt to set the iron on since she occasionally leaks.  The fabrics are from my favorite fabrics that are stored in this cabinet.  I used this Scrappy Pinwheel Block Tutorial and made it larger by adding the white border.

My buxom bosom chair cracks me up!  A shirt is a great way to hold a cushion in place on a chair back.

That's my room!  You can see here how I had it set up several years ago.

You might be surprised to learn that my sewing room is in the master bedroom! We built it big so I'd have the space.  I am super thankful that I have a place all my own that I can leave set up all the time.  It truly is my ♥ happy ♥ place!

great space, thanks for sharing! I love that you found your sewing table at a thrift store. I need to do more thrift store stalking! And btw - space to hold "treasures", not "junk". LOL

Thanks for sharing your room. I always like to see what others are doing so I can get some ideas for re-arranging my own room.

I could move right into your space and be as happy as you are! Isn't it wonderful to have a dear hubby willing and able to make us special things. Your room looks wonderful. Thanks for sharing it.

I love the light and how organized you are! I have my Grandma's Bernina 830 she bought in June 1972--the same month I was born. She paid $850 for it and had a cabinet. I had to retire is several years ago, but I still love using it every now and then.

Great space, Myra! My only problem would be getting to sleep with that gorgeous stash of fabric in the same room.

What a beautiful & bright space! I am also organized, but definitely more cramped! I just bought the same cutting mat I see in your room, I love that it is printed on both sides & figure I can get twice the life.

I can't resist snooping on other quilter's sewing spaces. Great layout and furniture. My space just moved to the room above our master BR and when hubs goes to bed before me I have to finish up fast because the floor squeaks. He texts me "Quiet time" as my warning. I'm trying to sew more in the morning now since my nights have been cut short. Thanks for the peek!

What a fine place to sew. I'm almost envious of those shelves your husband made and the huge table for your cutting mats. Lucky you!

I always love seeing other people's sewing rooms! Too bad someone doesn't set up a museum dedicated to sewing rooms!
That's a great Bernina you've got there too!

I'm currently working on my own sewing room post, but I don't have nearly as much to say. I loved your virtual tour. $40 for that awesome sewing table... You can't beat that w/a stick! And I'm totally coveting your ironing board! I agree there is nothing like having your own dedicated sewing room/space! Found you on Let's Bee Social. Stop by and visit anytime.

I love your $40 sewing desk! What a fantastic and useful bargain!! And I think it's great that your machine is 40 years old. She's certainly earned her keep in that time :)

Thanks for letting us peek into your special room.

What a wonderful place! If that's what 600 yards looks like, I'm in trouble. Love, love the ironing board. I'm going to create that exact same setup as soon as I can. I have so enjoyed seeing everyone's sewing spaces, and yours is bright, organized, and simply wonderful!

I so enjoyed seeing your creative happy space. I love the ironing table. I saw an idea on a blog once about converting an infant changing table to an ironing table and am on the lookout for one this weekend as it's my city's big rummage sale weekend. Your husband must share your passion for quilting to let you use the master bedroom. It's been fun to see everyone's sewing spaces.

I just have to ask...how did you ever measure all your fabric or were you just estimating?
