Country Cottage Twin Quilt {a Finish!}

My One Monthly Goal for January is finished and linked at the party!  This quilt was declared my January OMG in this post.

Can I just say I ♥ this quilt!?!

Some of the blocks in this quilt were created as part of the Urban Neighborhood Sew Along.  I added the hourglass blocks.  Not having enough of one fabric for the hourglass blocks, I used the same print in four colorways.

This quilt is 100% from my stash!

I don't often add borders to quilts, but this quilt called for an "old-fashioned" border.  One of my custom quilt customers is a quilt appraiser, and she told me that antique quilts with borders are more valuable, because many people couldn't afford yardage of fabric for a border so borders were rarely added.  Most quilts were entirely made from scraps.

One of my goals for 2016 is to use my stash of backings, both extra wide and yardage, and this meets that goal!  This is an extra wide backing bought at a local quilt shop a number of years ago.  I can't even remember the quilt I had in mind when I bought it.  The pink floral tone-on-tone is perfect!

Guess what I learned while quilting this quilt???  Oh, I wish I had noticed sooner!  The roll of batting is labeled 90" wide but is actually 94" wide!!!  So many twin quilts that were 88" long I could have oriented the opposite direction and saved a ton of batting!!  I have often grumbled to myself about batting companies not increasing their batting sizes to keep up to date with the thicker mattresses of today, and maybe they've been reading my mind!  Be sure you measure your batting roll - it might be bigger than labeled!  A goal for 2016 is to use the batting strips I have leftover - they are about 90" x 15".  They are taking over my fabric closet, and I can barely get the door open!

Quilt Stats:
  • Pattern:  Urban Neighborhood blocks combined with hourglass blocks.
  • Size:  60" x 88" twin
  • Fabric:  Hill Farm by Brenda Riddle for Lecein
  • Batting:  100% cotton
  • Backing:  Sanctuary by 3 Sisters for Moda
  • Quilting:  Allover medium meandering stitch in white thread on Mrs.Singer, my 31-15 with a patent date of 1896, mounted on a long-arm quilting frame.
  • Binding:  Blue floral print from the Hill Farm collection, double fold with mitered corners, attached by machine for durability.
  • Value:  Sweet as can be!

Isn't it wonderful to make a whole quilt from fabric you already have on hand? And it's especially wonderful when you have fabric as beautiful as this. Your quilt is gorgeous. I love the wide border and the fabric you chose.

The addition of the hourglass blocks was brilliant! And to use the same print in four colorways was simply perfect. Job well done!

What a nice quilt! Want suggestions for using the batting strips? I dice the small ones up even smaller and use them as stuffing for dolls and animals for the grands. The bigger ones go into small quilts and minis. Sometimes they fit perfectly without piecing or cutting. BTW, I don't sew them when piecing...just lay the batting down so it abuts the first section and pin, pin, pin. As long as it doesn't move you're okay! (Visiting from Crazy Mom Quilts linkup.)

Sorry if I'm repeating myself...I can't see my first attempt and I wanted to tell you that I really like this quilt. So pretty! (https://www.facebook.com/Fleur-de-Lis-Quilts-and-Accessories-137911612920543/)

That's seriously a good point, Myra. Often I find I've miscalculated, too. I have a Rubbermaid bin full of the same as you, and I always head there first when making straps, handles, mug rugs, wall hangings, etc. The scraps can take you over if you're not careful.

Your quilt is very cohesive, especially for a completely scrappy piece. I didn't realize batting sizes may be larger than they are labeled, or that borders increase an antique quilt's value. Please share this post on my Lessons Learned Linky: http://quiltingmod.blogspot.com/2015/12/lessons-learned-linky-1.html. It's full of interesting tidbits that I'm sure many quilters didn't know.

As soon as I saw your quilt, I thought of an English country cottage, complete with thatched roof and kitchen garden, a wicker chair on a front porch - and all those other serenely beautiful British things. I guess this is my (very) long way of say "I absolutely love your quilt. It left me smiling..."

A wonderful finish for OMG. I love the idea of using up the stash including batting that this represents. Soon you'll have more room for new fabric!

I love that quilt too! I didn't know that about borders on vintage quilts. It makes me appreciate great grandma's quilts more now. Thank you!
