Rainbow Afghan Finish!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

I've been working on this rainbow afghan for the last four months, and it's finished!  The pattern is Lazy Waves, and it measures approx 75" x 65" wide, just right for a queen size bed.

This afghan was made from my yarn stash, which is a combination of yarn from both of my grandmas and my own purchases.  The colors in the rainbows vary because I used up what I had and switched to a similar color when one ran out.  I only bought three skeins to fill in when there was nothing left in a color family, and there's probably enough left to make another blanket of similar size without buying much.

I'm thinking the next one will be a pastel version to work on clearing out those skeins.  While spring is here and crocheting seems to be more of a winter pastime, I enjoyed making this so much that I plan to work on another one, winter or no.

My grandma was an amazing crocheter, and she was the queen of hiding yarn tails.  The afghans she made still do not have the yarn ends poking out 40 years later, something I haven't mastered.  I found this tutorial on weaving in the ends, a method I had never seen before, and it must have been her trick.  I gave it a go this time, and hopefully it works over time as the afghan is used.

Slow Sunday Stitching | Rainbow Afghan | Mermaid Blanket

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

My Slow Sunday Stitching is a crochet rainbow afghan for my bed.  Rather than measure its progress in inches, I've begun measuring the number of completed rainbows.  Nearly 4!

I finished the mermaid blanket for my niece's birthday but forgot to take a picture of it before I gifted it to her.  What you can't tell from the picture below is that the majority of the blanket is a true blanket that lays on your chest/lap, and only the bottom 15" or so is a cocoon for the feet.  It's not nearly the tripping hazard that it looks like it could be.

Slow Sunday Stitching | Rainbow Afghan + Mermaid Tail!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

My Slow Sunday Stitching is a crochet rainbow afghan for my bed.  I did get 5 more rows finished on the rainbow afghan but fell down a second rabbit hole in my crochet time today.  A mermaid blanket!

The mermaid blanket is for my niece for her birthday.  I found it as a kit at Craftsy, and it's even cheaper now than when I bought it.  It's going together fairly quickly after figuring out how to use that huge hook.  I thought the large hook in my collection was big enough, but it wasn't the right size to get gauge, so I had to order some.  Prime had it here in a snap!

See this adorable pouch?  I opened the box from Amazon and thought there must have been a mistake; I didn't order a pouch.  Hmm, opening it up revealed that the set of huge hooks and needles I ordered came in the cutest pouch - totally surprised and tickled pink!  You can find the set here.

Slow Sunday Stitching | Rainbow Afghan + Another Rabbit Trail

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

My Slow Sunday Stitching is a crochet rainbow afghan for my bed.  I've advanced two whole rows because I fell down a rabbit hole.

I started Lazy Waves three Sundays ago and right now it's about 26" x 72".  There are 16 colors, and the plan is to keep up the rainbow pattern as established, finishing the edges with white.  The size will be determined by the amount of yarn it uses up; this is entirely from my yarn stash, and I'm not buying any more for this project.

And you see the rabbit hole I fell in ... some oh.so.pretty variegated purple!  So this is actually how I ended up in this hole.  I ran out of the next color of orange for the rainbow afghan, and all of the yarn is in the shop, so I need to get out to the shop and see if there is more of that shade of orange hibernating.  I brought in this delightful purple mush the last time I was out foraging yarn in the shop, and since I'm too scared of the dark to go look for the orange {I only remember after dark!}, I've been using up this fun purple.  Which will also be a rainbow afghan because I've got this variegated yarn in most every color of the rainbow, thanks to the yarn stash from my Grandma!

Slow Sunday Stitching | Crochet Rainbow Afghan

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

My Slow Sunday Stitching is a crochet rainbow afghan for my bed.

Yesterday was Pick Up Day at our house.  I worked on picking up all of my messes around the house.  This Ikea cart had become a dumping ground next to my longarm, so I emptied it out and put my rainbow of yarn in it next to my chair in the living room.  Then I worked on picking up my sewing room, and oh my, it's a great feeling to start a new week with a clean sewing room!  It gets the creative juices flowing for sure!

In case you're wondering about the blankets on my chair, the Ombre Trip Around the World quilt was a Craftsy kit that is no longer available, and the Eat Sleep Quilt cotton knit blanket is from the Fat Quarter Shop.  It's the perfect weight for cozying up on these colder days or putting on a layer in the summer when the A/C is just a tad too cold.

I started Lazy Waves two Sundays ago and right now it's about 24" x 72".  There are 16 colors, and the plan is to keep up the rainbow pattern as established, finishing the edges with white.  The size will be determined by the amount of yarn it uses up; this is entirely from my yarn stash, and I'm not buying any more for this project.

There's still time to make something for Christmas!  Get any Craftsy class for under $20 through tonight.

Slow Sunday Stitching | Rainbow Crochet Afghan

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

My Slow Sunday Stitching is a crochet rainbow afghan for my bed.  We've had a really cold spell here, and the covers just aren't enough, so it's the perfect excuse to make a rainbow afghan for on top of my rainbow quilt since the yarn always comes out this time of year anyway.

I started Lazy Waves last Sunday afternoon and have made this progress over the last week.  Right now it's about 12" x 65".  There are 16 colors, and the plan is to keep up the rainbow pattern as established, finishing the edges with white.  The size will be determined by the amount of yarn it uses up; this is entirely from my yarn stash, and I'm not buying any more for this project.

My Knit Mara Shawl {A Learning Experience!} + A Sale!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

This is my wobbly attempt at the Mara Shawl by Madelinetosh.  It's a free pattern on Ravelry.  Very simple, very easy ... knit and yarn over ... but I have struggled!  Keeping the open strip actually centered without moving it over one stitch has kept me busy - pulling rows out, that is!  Not once or twice, but three times I have pulled rows out - rows as in 6-10 rows each time!  {SIGH}
The yarn is Pacific Color Wave by Cascade Yarns and is my first-ever purchase from our local real, true, stand-alone yarn shop.  I would never have picked it out except there was a child's sweater knitted as a sample in the shop, and the subtle color changes were just too pretty to resist!

This yarn is 40% Superwash Merino Wool / 60% Acrylic, rated worsted, but a thin worsted.  It's nice to have the pros at a yarn shop help you select the correct weight of yarn.  Worsted is a fairly broad category, and their shop is arranged by thinner worsted, medium worsted, and thicker worsted, which is great, but why there is so much variation is very weird and annoying to me!  This seems to run through the yarn industry - brands sold at JoAnn's and Michael's also do this.  I like Cascade Yarns because they are reasonable in price.  Here is a nice selection of worsted Cascade Yarns that might work for the Mara shawl if you'd like to make one!

The picture below is a more accurate rendering of the colors in my yarn.  It's grayish and purplish, but not bluish.  I could have taken the first picture again, but I figure this shows what this pretty pattern looks like in a different colorway.
I usually have at least one yarn project going at any given time and usually several concurrently.  It keeps my hands busy and helps my mind not to wander when I'm watching a DVD class or listening to books on CD with the kids {we homeschool}.  This is one of several projects I have going on in addition to several scarves, a crocheted rainbow pillow, a giant crocheted round rainbow bag, and a lap-sized afghan.  The area around my rocking chair looks like my grandma's did!  {Thanks, Grandma, for the inspiration!}

Craftsy has a My First Lace Shawl class, which I should have watched before I began my shawl.  It would have saved me a lot of headache.  This class includes casting-on tips, how to read charts {I go cross-eyed looking at them!}, and how to fix mistakes without having to rip out your whole shawl!  Ka-Ching - exactly what I need!!  I purchased this class today {it's on sale!}, and I will be watching it before knitting anymore on my Mara shawl.  Who knows, maybe I will even begin again like Finnigan!

Craftsy also has a WaterSpout Shawl Kit available for this class.  I chose the coordinating kit in Avondale.  Isn't it beautiful!?

Craftsy is having a Flash Sale!

Save up to 70% off popular kits and fabric!  Yarn, too!
