Today I'm excited to share a sweet Ships Ahoy baby quilt with you!  This quilt pattern is included in Cheryl of Meadow Mist Designs brand-new book called Just One Charm Pack Quilts, and today is my stop on the book hop!

The Book Hop runs through Thursday, July 29th, so be sure to head over to Meadow Mist Designs and sign up to receive blog post emails so you are sure you don't miss any of the featured quilts.  There are so many designs you don't want to miss.  :)

Welcome to Readers New and Seasoned!

If this is your first time here, having stopped by because of Cheryl's Book Hop, or if you're a previous reader, welcome to all of you!  I'm Myra, and Busy Hands Quilts is where I share my quilting love with you.  Busy Hands Quilts has sponsored Cheryl's mystery quilt alongs for a number of years, and I'm happy to have been invited to make a quilt for her Book Hop.  :)

I'd love it if you'd subscribe to my newsletter where I spoil my readers with subscriber-only Pattern Sales, Giveaways, Tips and Tricks, as well as amazing fabric deals I find around the web.  I also share links to shops that have made quilt kits in my patterns.  You'll even receive a free quilt pattern right off the bat!

As a quilt pattern designer, my goal is to create patterns that are a true value for you.  Almost all of my patterns include these features:

  • All the Sizes - as many as work out mathematically to an actual quilt size.  Sometimes this is tricky with on-point quilt settings, so they include just two or three sizes; but sometimes the size can be made up with the addition of borders.  It all depends on the design.  I ♥ doing all of the math for you!
  • Strip Piecing - oh my, life is about making more quilts, so let's make them more quickly!  You'll find strip piecing whenever it makes sense to include it which is almost every pattern with just a few exceptions.  Would you believe that even Hampton Court is strip pieced?  Here is a peek at it, and yes, indeed it is entirely strip pieced.
  • Precuts - my patterns include precut options when they work, and sometimes both precut and yardage options are included.  Sometimes the part of pattern writing that takes the longest is figuring out which precuts work the best, especially how to make the best use of a fat quarter or layer cake, but I don't mind 'cause I am all about spoiling you!

Ships Ahoy Quilt Pattern

The Ships Ahoy quilt pattern in the Just One Charm Pack Quilts Book is a charm pack quilt with two background fabrics.  The large blocks go together very quickly.  They are reminiscent of life rings on a ship, thus the quilt pattern name, Ships Ahoy.  The design in the book has nine blocks set 3x3, but this quilt has only eight blocks, with a solid background square placed in the center instead of a block.  I didn't have another colorway for a ninth block, so eight blocks won!

This pattern is easy to adapt to other sizes - just make more or less blocks and adjust border lengths.  Next week I will be featuring a table runner in this pattern, made with just three nearly identical blocks.  I encourage you to get the book and change up the patterns to make the quilt exactly as you envision it and how it suits your space.

The Just One Charm Pack Quilts Book

This beautiful book includes 18 projects that use just one charm pack and two additional yardage fabrics.  Each quilt is shown in two different colorways to help get your creative juices flowing to create a quilt that reflects your personal style.  The quilts are baby size through small lap size, are very beginner friendly, and are traditionally pieced (no applique or paper piecing).  This is my kind of book!  :)  You can get a signed copy of the book right here.

If you're like me and don't collect charm packs, the patterns work really well with scraps from your stash.  As an added bonus, the book teaches you how to create your own charm packs.

Rainbow of Solids!

I used my Kona solids scrap bins to design a rainbow quilt using the pattern, with eight colorways, each with two hues.  Kona Ash is the background fabric and Kona Titanium is the accent fabric, border, and binding.  The backing fabric is tiny scattered leaves in rainbow colors which I have hoarded in my stash for far too many  years.  I may or may not have purchased an entire bolt of both the quilting cotton and flannel in this fabric.  It's one of my favorite fabrics ever!

Longarm Quilting

The rainbow and heart quilting design is perfect for baby quilts.  It's called Rainbow Hearts and is available at Intelligent Quilting.  The quilting is large enough that the quilt is very soft and snuggly.  This quilt was quilted on my Handi Quilter Fusion with ProStitcher in light gray thread.  The light gray is nearly invisible on the backing, a feature that I prefer in my quilting.

This quilt top was sewn by my professional sewist, Kare, and quilted and bound by me.

What a lovely variation on Cheryl's pattern. And your quilting accents the design beautifully!

Gorgeous version of Ship's Ahoy! Those solids just shine and I love your decision to leave out the 9th block in the center - that negative space helps to echo the circle aspect of the blocks. The quilting is so eye catching too, Myra! Wonderfully done!

Modifying the pattern to only have 8 rings looks so natural, and I love the quilting motif you chose. There are so many great designs in Cheryl's book and this is one of the ones that calls to me the most (right now, anyway)!
