Precarious Quilt | Stash Statement Book Hop!

Meet Precarious, my version of a quilt from Stash Statement, a new improv quilting book by Kelly of My Quilt Infatuation.

This quilt is made from 90 different Kona Solids, each appearing three times, and Moda Crossweave in Black.

Quilt Stats:
Pattern:   Precarious from Stash Statement by Kelly Young
Size:  38" x 49"
Fabric:  Kona Cotton and Moda Crossweave in Black
Batting:  Warm and White Batting
Backing:  Gray with white triangles
Quilting:  Zing in dark gray thread on Gratitude

This is Kelly's original Precarious Quilt in lap size.

I had intended to use a rainbow of Simply Color fabrics to make the improv panels, but I ended up with so many quilting deadlines {and a longarm in the longarm hospital} that I had to use a faster option.  Rather than making improv panels, I made strip sets, stitched each one into a tube, sub-cut them, removed stitches in bargello style, and sewed them back together again.  Here's pictures of the strip sets from my Instagram feed.  You'll see the second set of bargello panels in a baby quilt ... sometime this summer.

Here's a glimpse of the quilts in the book.  They're pretty amazing, aren't they?  If improv looks daunting to you, don't worry!  Kelly has broken down how to make the panels step by step and then how to get them into the quilt design.

Oh my I just love your version! It has a very pixel-ish, video game look to it, and I absolutely adore that!

Your Precarious quilt is so awesome, Myra. I love your bargello version, and that quilting is the perfect compliment to the design. Thank you so much for participating in the blog tour!

You made it work for you - that is the way to do a stash quilt! Hope your longarm has returned to service - so hard to have our tools on the mend!

I love your version of this quilt. I know it looks more organized (less scrappy) than the book version, but I can see how if one had lots of 2 1/2" strips it could be done. I love the quilting design, too.

Hi Myra,
WOW - this is so beautiful and I had to read the sentence again where you said you used 90 different colors. Ninety!!! I just love this quilt. And your quilting looks just fabulous - I love, love seeing these details. Whenever I see close ups like this it makes me think I CAN do something similar. {{Hugs}} so thanks a bunch for motivating me.

I was sure that I posted a comment to your blog early this morning but I don't see it. I really enjoyed seeing your blog and a glimpse of the other quilts in the book. It is a must have. I like the impact of the gray with your solid fabrics. Also the quilting is outstanding.

Wow. Your version is awesome. Love that quilting motif. How did you add all the quilts such that they change on their own?
