This pattern has been in the works behind the scenes for so long, and I'm thrilled to finally get to share it with you!
Meet the Picnic Plaid quilt pattern. This quilt includes instructions for using jelly roll strips, fat quarters, and 1/4-yard cuts, so it's perfect for using your stash or precut fabric bundles.

A Granny Square with a Twist pattern
Picnic Plaid is inspired by the traditional Granny Square quilt block with one caveat - there are very few bias edges! Most Granny Square blocks have bias edges all around the edge of each block, and each bias edge is then sewn to the bias edges from the adjacent quilt block. Because Picnic Plaid is entirely strip pieced - yes, you read that right - entirely strip pieced - there are very few bias edges in the quilt!
The design is created with blocks set on point and unique setting triangles to complete the Granny Square blocks clear out to the edges of the quilt. That may sound complicated, but it's easier than it looks, and the quilt pattern lays it all out step-by-step with diagrams to explain the entire process.

Fabric Selection Tips
Fabric selection for Picnic Plaid is super easy. The most important thing is that the majority of the prints contrast well against the background fabric; i.e., darker fabrics on a lighter background and lighter fabrics on a darker background. Even a few lighter fabrics are fine in this design when they are placed in the middle of the strip sets, so they end up in the middle of the blocks and don't touch the background fabric (if it's light).
You'll love that Picnic Plaid is jelly roll and fat quarter friendly, so it's perfect for using your scraps or stash, or that special FQ bundle you have been longing to get.

All the Sizes are included
The Picnic Plaid quilt pattern has instructions for Baby, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King sizes. Other sizes did not work out mathematically for this design.
Wall Hangings and Table Toppers
The Picnic Plaid in the Baby size makes amazing wall hangings and table toppers! The quilts shown in Painterly Petals, Hudson, and Emma's Dry Goods are all made in the Baby size, and they will be beautiful as farmhouse decor!
