Picnic Plaid Wall Hanging Quilt in Painterly Petals

I have another Picnic Plaid quilt to share with you today!  This beautifully saturated fabric is Painterly Petals by Robert Kaufman and is stunning when placed on a white background in the Picnic Plaid quilt design.  Such a bright and happy quilt that would make a perfect gift for a loved one!

The Picnic Plaid quilt pattern is a twist on the Granny's Square quilt block.  The entire quilt is made with strip piecing and very few bias edges.

Painterly Petals Fabrics by Robert Kaufman

This fabric collection is a mix of watercolor prints in deeply saturated bright colors in the entire rainbow.  It's such a delightful fabric collection to sew up! I have previously used it in three quilts.

Picnic Plaid Quilt Pattern Highlights

The Picnic Plaid quilt pattern is a fun twist on the Granny's Square block.  The quilt is made entirely with strip piecing, and don't worry, you won't be piecing together individual squares.  So quick!

The instructions include five sizes - Baby, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King.  The Full size didn't work out mathematically, so it isn't included in the pattern.  

I'm also happy to share that it's Precut friendly!  Use 2-1/2" jelly roll strips, fat quarters, or even 1/4-yard cuts.  Scrap bins are perfect for this design also.  :)

Longarm Machine Quilting

The digital longarm quilting design is Swivel Circle 2 by Karlee.  This is the first time I've used the design, and I only wish I made it a tad bit smaller.  Quilting is a bright white thread, done on my Handi Quilter Fusion with Pro Stitcher.

The backing is Garden Pindot in Cobalt with a touch of white scattered dots, which is currently in stock in our shop right here.

The binding is a turquoise from the Boundless Botanicals collection.  

Since I sold almost my entire stash before we moved from Washington State to Ohio this summer, I am having a difficult time finding fabric for bindings and backing if I haven't planned ahead to have coordinates on hand, and for some strange reason, I sold the last of the Painterly Petals yardage I had in my stash and didn't save it for this quilt!

It was so fun mocking up Picnic Plaid in a variety of upcoming, current, and older fabric collections, that I had a hard time stopping!  For background fabrics, I use scrappy low-volumes, white, cream, navy, and black; so many options to change up the quilt!  All quilts shown are the Baby size.

Picnic Plaid Baby or Wall Hanging Quilt in Picadilly

Last but not least in the five Picnic Plaid quilts I've shared here on the blog is a Baby quilt in Picadilly, or maybe it's a Wall Hanging or Table Topper; that's what I plan to use it for myself!

The Picnic Plaid quilt design is a strip-pieced Granny's Square design, so quick to make with jelly roll strips or even fat quarters, or strips from your stash bins.  Included are five sizes, too.

We have Picadilly Throw size quilt kits currently available in the shop.

The Picadilly Fabric Collection

Picadilly is a truly American-style fabric collection with stars, stripes, bandana, and fireworks prints in reds, blues, gray, and white.  They're perfect for Picnic Plaid, and I look forward to using this as a table topper in my dining room.  Oh right, there isn't a table in there because we sold almost all of the furniture before our big cross-country move from Washington State to Ohio this past summer.  It hasn't been too high of a priority to replace yet, but we do have company coming for several weeks very soon, so we will be using a plastic folding table for now.  😬

Anyhoo, those fabrics!  This is Picadilly for Riley Blake Designs.  So much beautifulness!  A number of the prints are included in all of the colorways, and a number of them are stars.  💢

The Picnic Plaid Quilt Pattern

The Picnic Plaid quilt pattern includes 5 sizes - Baby (perfect for a Wall Hanging or Table Topper), Throw, Twin, Queen, and King.  You'll love having all of the sizes. 

It's also precut friendly, perfect for jelly rolls, fat quarters, or 1/4-yard cuts.  Use your stash!

Strip pieced for a quick and easier finish.  This is considered an intermediate quilt pattern because it is set on point, so some previous experience is suggested to make this quilt top.

The Picnic Plaid Quilt in Forget Me Not + Preorder a Quilt Kit!

The Picnic Plaid quilt pattern is now in the shop!  This quilt pattern is a twist on the traditional Granny's Square block; it's unique in that it's completely strip pieced with very few bias edges to work with.  That's a win!  Plus, every other block is an outline of the Granny's Square block which lends to the plaid-look of the design.  

This design works with so many fabric styles from farmhouse to modern.  I'm loving the farmhouse look of the fabrics in this quilt.

Forget Me Not by Allison Harris

How gorgeous is the fabric collection Forget Me Not by Allison Harris for Windham Fabrics!  The saturated colors and variety of prints lend to a farmhouse theme, and the splash of orange on navy is perfect for the Picnic Plaid quilt pattern.

Because Forget Me Not has very few really light or really dark prints, this collection works perfectly for both a light and a dark background fabric.  

The background in this quilt is a Tiny Marks print in Navy from the Hudson collection by Windham Fabrics.

Longarm Quilting

The quilting design on this quilt is Ribbon Curls, done on my Handi Quilter Fusion with Pro Stitcher in navy thread.  I like to use roundish designs on quilts that have a lot of angled pieces, to softn all of the straight edges.

The backing is Mix in Navy by Timeless Treasures, available right here in the Busy Hands Quilts shop.

The binding is the Tiny Marks in Navy found on the quilt front.

This quilt top was made by Joanne, one of my professional sewists, and quilted and bound by me.
