Shooting Stars Throw Quilt in Firework Fields on Blue Background!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

Today I'm sharing a sparkling Shooting Stars Throw quilt in patriotic colors!  The quilt pattern has been updated which called for some new quilt samples!  This beautiful star quilt is made in a new red, white, and blue fabric collection called Firework Fields by Riley Blake Designs.

The Shooting Stars quilt pattern now includes 6 sizes, a border and updated block sizing.  You'll love how easy this quilt is to put together!

The Shooting Stars quilt pattern is available in the Busy Hands Quilts shop.

Shooting Star Quilt Pattern Features

The newly updated quilt pattern now includes 6 sizes instead of just two.  You'll love that the Lap, Throw, Twin, two Queens (Square and Rectangle), and King sizes are all included.  You won't have to do any math to create the size you really want!  The Full size didn't work out mathematically, so it's not included in the pattern.

The first version of Shooting Stars included just two sizes with smaller blocks in the Throw size and larger blocks in the Queen size.  In the updated pattern, all quilt sizes are made with the same size of quilt blocks.  I think you'll love this new feature, as well as the added border which gives the eye a place to rest more easily.

You can read more about the Shooting Stars quilt with the white background in this blog post.  And you may say, wait, there isn't a border on the white quilt!  Uh, yeah, I forgot to add the border.  And would you believe I put a line in patterns with borders to remember to add the border because it often isn't shown on the quilt plan that shows all quilt sizes!  I did not notice my mistake until I went to bind the quilt and there was this nice, neat pile of white border strips next to the binding strips.  ðŸ™ƒ

Fabric Selection

This fabric collection is Firework Fields by Gracey Larson for Riley Blake Designs, using just 5 prints from the collection with a background of Confetti Cotton in Coastal Blue, also by Riley Blake.  Fabrics used in this quilt are :

  • Large Star Points:  Fireflies Red C17585-RED
  • Center Square and Small Star Points:  Main White C17580-WHITE
  • Small Squares in Stars:  Gingham Red C17583-RED
  • Chain Blocks, 2 Fabrics:  Floral Red C17587-RED and Fireworks White C17582-WHITE
  • Background:  Confetti Cotton in Coastal Blue C120-COASTALBLUE
  • Binding:  Gingham Red C17583-RED

Maybe you're nervous about using gingham fabric in a quilt, figuring they will end up crooked and visually meh?  There are three ginghams in this collection; red, blue, and light blue, and they work even for block piecing because the check prints are printed so straight on the fabric. I'm impressed! ☑️

Firework Fields fabric is available here on Etsy.

The Shooting Stars quilt pattern is available in the Busy Hands Quilts shop.

Longarm Machine Quilting

This quilt was machine longarm quilted with a design called Feathered Stars by Melissa Kelley of Sew Shabby Pantos.  This design has no backtracking.  Quilted on my Handi Quilter Amara with ProStitcher in Superior Omni Big Springs 3111 Thread.

This quilt was pieced and quilted by Myra Barnes.

The backing fabric is a print from the Firework Fields collection, which includes white stars and red stripes on a light blue background.  C17584-LIGHTBLUE

Shooting Stars Throw Quilt in Firework Fields on White Background!

The piecing in Shooting Stars is fairly simple and makes for enjoyable sewing time.  This quilt was the project I worked on at quilting group at church a few months ago.  That means it's easy, uncomplicated sewing because with all of the visiting and sharing, it's difficult to work on a complicated project while there.  A number of times I've had to rip out stitching at quilting group because I was visiting and not paying enough attention, and I rarely have to rip seams when I sew by myself.  Not on this project, though!

Fabric Selection

This fabric collection is Firework Fields by Gracey Larson for Riley Blake Designs, using just 5 prints from the collection with a background of Confetti Cotton in Bright White, also by Riley Blake.  Fabrics used in this quilt are :

  • Large Star Points:  Fireworks Coastal Blue C17582-COASTALBLUE
  • Center Square and Small Star Points:  Main Red C17580-RED
  • Small Squares in Stars:  Gingham Blue C17583-COASTALBLUE

I made a mistake when making this quilt!  I forgot to add the border.  And would you believe I put a line in patterns with borders to remember to add the border because it often isn't shown on the quilt plan that shows all quilt sizes!  I did not notice my mistake until I went to bind the quilt and there was this nice, neat pile of white border strips next to the binding strips.  ðŸ™ƒ

In this picture of the quilt backing, you can really see how straight the gingham print is to the edge of the quilt.  Usually I would steer clear of using this print as a backing because it would really show up along the edges of the quilt if it weren't printed straight on the grain.  It works perfectly!

The binding is another example of how awesome this gingham print is!  Once again, I would normally be very hesitant to use such a gingham print as binding, as I have in the past and the quilt edge looked pretty ragged.  This gingham really adds a lot of sparkle to the quilt top and binding.

Shooting Stars Quilt Pattern Updated - 4 New Sizes!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

The Shooting Stars quilt pattern has been updated with four new quilt sizes.  You'll love how easy it is to piece the pretty stars and two-color Irish chain blocks!

Shooting Stars is available in the Busy Hands Quilts shop.

Shooting Stars Pattern Features

The updated pattern includes 6 sizes - Lap, Throw, Twin, Square Queen, Rectangle Queen, and King.  The previous version of this pattern included just two sizes that were the exact same design - Throw and Queen - with smaller blocks in the Throw and larger blocks in the Queen.  All of the quilt sizes in the updated pattern are made with the same size of quilt block.  This required all new math, calculations, and diagrams in the updated pattern.

The first version of Shooting Stars was released in 2021 and has been updated in 2026.

Beautiful Patriotic Fabrics

These two quilts are the Throw size, both made with Firework Fields by Gracey Larson for Riley Blake Designs.  The stars in the white background quilt are blue, and the stars in the blue background quilt are red.  These fabrics are used in the cover quilt

You will find additional images of these two quilts as well as the exact fabrics used in them in these blog posts:  White Background and Blue Background.
