Today's feature is the Picnic Plaid quilt pattern in Hudson, a fabric collection by Windham Fabrics. The collection has an Americana flair with navy, red, pink, and gray fabrics in bandanas, stripes, florals, and tone-on-tones. It works perfectly in Picnic Plaid. This quilt is the Throw size which uses 49 jelly roll strips.
The Picnic Plaid quilt pattern is entirely strip pieced for a much faster and more accurate finish. You'll love this nontraditional method of piecing Granny Square blocks.

The Hudson Fabric Collection
Hudson fabrics have an Americana vibe with reds, navy, pink, and gray. The gray is a taupe-gray, and those prints have pinks in them, as well. Many of the prints are seen in all of the colorways in this collection. I love the ditty florals. The background of this quilt is bright white for a crisp contrast to all of those pretty prints. The backing is a tiny gingham I had in my stash from a Riley Blake collection, and the binding is Tiny Marks in Navy from the Hudson collection.
A Closer Look at the Picnic Plaid Quilt Pattern
If you love strip piecing, you'll love how it is used exclusively in Picnic Plaid since the entire quilt top is strip pieced with the exception of a couple of squares placed at the ends of rows. This makes the different blocks go together quickly.
As with all of my patterns, this quilt pattern includes as many sizes as possible, with the exception of the Full size which didn't work out mathematically. I love doing all of the math for you, so you can just pull your fabrics, cut, count, and sew. We do the counting and labeling upfront so there is no thinking later on and you can put on a podcast (or whatever you listen to!) and just sit down and sew. Included are the Baby, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King sizes.
Sewing Machines are Loud Enough to Cause Permanent Hearing Damage
Above I mentioned putting on a podcast (or something else to listen to) because sewing machines are loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage. When my husband joined me in the biz last year and no longer worked outside the home, one of the first things he said was, "Do you have any idea how loud your machine is?" I downloaded a decibel app on my phone, and it registered at 85 db which is loud enough to cause hearing damage with exposure over an extended period of time. So now I always put on bluetooth noise-canceling headphones and listen to a podcast whenever I sew. It also means I can't hear him come into my sewing room, so he frightens me to death without meaning to. Apparently the headphones also alter my vision, because I also never see him come in, even with my sewing table facing the door!

Longarm Quilting
The longarm quilting design on this quilt is Stars and Loops, done on my Handi Quilter Fusion with Pro Stitcher in white thread.
This quilt top was made by Kare, one of my professional sewists, months ago and then packed away for months during our move from Washington State to Ohio this summer. It was exciting to pull it out of the quilt top bin and bring it to life with batting, backing, and quilting.
