Glorious Dawn Quilt by Myra Barnes of Busy Hands Quilts!

I can finally show you some of the Secret Sauce Sewing that was happening back in May!!  Meet Glorious Dawn, a quilt I designed for Craftsy's new Quilt Along!  Yep, you may have heard me squeal on January 23rd, 2018 at 9:04 a.m. Pacific time when I received notice that Glorious Dawn had been selected!  Since that time many, many hours were spent putting the design on paper in three sizes and three colorways in each size.  The pattern is 23 pages long, friend!  But no worries - it's broken down into easy steps, so it's not as difficult as it looks!

This is Glorious Dawn in Botanical Hydrangea, in sweet purples and aquas, and this is the quilt I made for the pattern.  It's a queen size at 94" square.

This is Glorious Dawn in Collage Sea Spray, in a blend of soothing blues and greens.  To make this quilt twin size, the X blocks down the sides are omitted, and less of other blocks are used.

This is the rainbow-ish version in Solids Spectrum.  This is the lap size which is identical to the queen with smaller blocks and less blocks in a few of the rounds.

This is my fabric pull for the Rainbow Picnic Blanket Sew Along over at Stitched in Color.  The floral backing is canvas, and the size of the picnic blanket is limited by the size of the backing but also makes the perfect size for a Kona Cotton layer cake.  Kona Cotton is the Basic of the Month at the Fat Quarter Shop this month, and it's the perfect time to stock up on your solids.

I'm also participating in the Scrappy Patchwork Quilt Sew Along hosted by Sherri at A Quilting Life.  My fabric selection is not entirely scrappy but is based around Fresh Cut fabrics leftover from my Oh My Darling quilt with a few other fabrics added to round out the fabric requirements.  I'm enlarging it to a twin size from an oversized lap.  All of the units are made and ready to be assembled into the quilt top.  The next step is revealed tomorrow at A Quilting Life.

Twisted Irish Chain Craftsy Class - One of My Favorites!

I made this lap quilt in Bee My Honey fabrics in Amy Gibson's Twisted Irish Chain class several years ago.  I love the way she teaches, and this traditional design just seems to be timeless.  I still love this quilt and use it as a piano bench cover in the living room.  I have another WIP in this pattern wishing it could be finished soon, and I'm hoping to do that!

This pattern is also found in The Simple Simon Guide to Patchwork Quilting by Liz Evans and Elizabeth Evans.

How I Plan to Improve my Walking Foot Skills

A Facebook reader suggested I was being too critical of my quilting when I posted that I plan to take out the quilting I had done because I didn't like it.  So here's my ghastly quilting {cringe!}.  I was too literal in following the wave of the bargello, and the turns are too sharp.  Quilting with a walking foot is not new to me, but I can see I need more practice before I work on this again, or else I need a different plan.  

I noticed this morning that Craftsy is having a 50% off selected classes, so I popped on over to see if they had any walking foot quilting classes, and they did!!  Two in fact, Creative Quilting with your Walking Foot and Next Steps with your Walking Foot, both by Jacquie Gering, each at a different skill level.  So I bought Creative Quilting with your Walking Foot since it's the first in the series and started watching it today.  I've already learned about painter's tape for marking - a new thought for me.  I've always used a Hera marker which most certainly has its place, but I can certainly see where painter's tape will save time!  I plan to buy Next Steps with your Walking Foot after I practice what I learn in the first class.
