Alaska-Themed Ombre Mountains Queen Quilt!

A fun project I have been working on for the last few weeks is an Ombre Mountains Queen quilt using Alaska-inspired colors!  This quilt was made for a friend of mine who - you guessed it - lives in Alaska.  I find making personalized quilts for people you care about makes the time and energy of making the quilt so much more fun and worthwhile - especially when they send pictures of their quilt displayed in their home.

These fabrics are from the Shades collection by Riley Blake Designs.  I will share the names of each fabric I used below in case you want to make this version of Ombre Mountains on your own!

The Ombre Mountains Pattern

Ombre Mountains is a stunning, gradating ombre quilt design that goes together quickly with simple piecing.  I love this pattern so much!  You can get as bold and creative as you want with this design.  You simply can't go wrong with this unique pattern.

Piece sizes vary by quilt size and increase as the quilt size increases.  The design in this Queen quilt still shines even with the larger block size which make the quilt go together more quickly.

The Throw size uses (13) 1/2-yard cuts and (1) 1/4-yard cut for the top fabric, so it's easy to purchase fabric online without having to buy much extra.  An additional bonus of so many colors requiring the same amount of fabric is you can decide on fabric order after you receive the fabric! Win-win!

6 Sizes Available

This quilt pattern includes all of the sizes - 6 in all - Baby, Lap, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King.  And don't worry, you don't have to do any of the math to create the perfect size quilt for your project, it's all been done for you!  The piece sizes vary for each quilt size.

This version of Ombre Mountains was made in the Queen size which measures approximately 95" x 97".  It's the perfect size if you are looking for a large bed quilt.

The fabrics used are from the Shades fabric collection by Riley Blake Designs.  I was inspired to create an Alaska-themed quilt for my friend and I felt like these colors really captured the heart of Alaska, from the lakes to the trees to the mountains, and the beautiful sky!

The wide backing used is Shabby in Nighttime by Riley Blake Designs.  This fabric is similar to Shades, and it works with the Shades fabrics really well.  I used the last of my stock for this quilt.  

Longarm Machine Quilting

This quilt was made on my HandiQuilter Amara with ProStitcher in four different quilting designs and five thread colors.  I did end up with a narrow area that wasn't quilted between some of the designs that I wasn't too excited about; I should have placed the designs closer together.  The longarm quilting designs are listed and shown below.

Ombre Mountains in Painted Desert by Connecting Threads is a beautiful quilt.  This quilt pattern is reminiscent of mountains and lakes, or the desert as in this case.  The quilt pattern includes 6 sizes - Baby, Lap, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King, and is yardage friendly.  Piece sizes vary by quilt size.  The skill level is confident beginner.

Ombre Mountains Throw Quilt Kit in Shimmer Tonals by Connecting Threads

Connecting Threads has kitted Ombre Mountains in their Shimmer Tonals fabric collection!  The sparkles on each fabric is a few shades lighter than the background color, creating really pretty shimmers across the fabric.  

This quilt kit is the Throw size and reflects sunset on the mountains.

Ombre Mountains Throw Quilt in Sunset Over the Mountains Colors!

A fun finish this past week was an Ombre Mountains Throw quilt in a Sunset Over the Mountains color scheme of golds to reds to purples to teals and finally to blues.  This quilt design is perfect for creating quilts that reflect colors seen in nature, such as desert to sky, or sea to sky.  In this case, it's mountains to sunset!

The Ombre Mountains quilt pattern includes 6 sizes, so you don't have to do any of the math to create the size you really want to make.

Oh, Those Shimmering Fabrics!

This beautiful shimmering fabric collection is new at Connecting Threads.  Meet Shimmer Tonals!  The plan is this fabric will be an evergreen fabric, which means it will be stocked for an extended period of time in the future.  Yay!  Those shimmering fabrics are made with flecks of lighter hues in the color, and they certainly do shimmer!

The Ombre Mountains Quilt Pattern

This quilt pattern includes all of the sizes - 6 in all - Baby, Lap, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King.  This pattern was written before I decided to include the Full size when it works, and it likely would have worked in this pattern.  Using different sizes of blocks and rectangles in each quilt size is what made so many sizes work.

This is the Throw size which measures approximately 62" x 78".  It's the perfect size for two to snuggle up on the sofa for an evening of relaxing.

This modern quilt pattern is truly quick and easy with large pieces and simple piecing.  If you can make a half-square triangle, then you can make this quilt.

Longarm Machine Quilting

This quilt was made by my sewist Kare Ybarra and quilted and bound by me.  The quilting was done on my HandiQuilter Amara with ProStitcher.  The design is Aqua Flame by Lorien Quilting.  Thread color varies down the quilt from yellow to orange to purple to light teal and bright blue, so the thread blends in to each color group.

This quilting design resembles shimmering flames.

Ombre Mountains Quilt in Moda Grunge

About 16 months ago, I had the pleasure of helping my son and his soon-to-be bride plan their surprise wedding. My siblings and I organized a family reunion in Sandpoint, Idaho to celebrate my 50th birthday.  The plan was to rent two vacation houses next to each other facing Lake Pend Oreille, relax, and spend time with family . . . what my family didn't know was that we added a wedding to the list of things to do.

It was such a beautiful wedding.  My husband officiated the wedding, my daughter was the maid of honor, and my husband and I gained a daughter!

Now here we are, 16 months later, and I was able to present my son and his wife with a late wedding gift - an Ombre Mountains quilt in colors that they picked out.

Ombre Mountains Quilt Pattern

Ombre Mountains is a stunning ombre quilt design.  This Ombre Mountains quilt was made into the Queen size in Moda Grunge fabrics.  This fabric is almost identical to the fabric selection chart included in the quilt pattern with just a few substitutes.

Batting is two layers Tuscany Wool and Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 cotton/poly.  In bed quilts I keep or make as gifts, I always use wool batting due to it's warming and cooling features.  The wool also gives a nice loft and accentuates the quilting design.  The quilt also has a layer of cotton/poly because we live in Ohio and have cold winters.  ❆

Ombre Mountains Quilt in Moments Fabric!

Today I'm sharing a beautiful Ombre Mountains quilt in Moments, a new fabric collection by Clothworks.  It's a wonderful blend of larger watercolor florals with itty bitty florals and blenders in pinks, peaches, blues, and greens.

Ombre Mountains Quilt Pattern

Due to the piece sizes in this quilt not being overly small, this design is quick and easy to make.  The directions show you how to create the HSTs so they flow from one print to the next.

This quilt pattern includes 6 sizes - Baby, Lap, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King - and piece sizes vary by quilt size to create the different sizes.  I love doing all of the math for you!

Ombre Mountains uses 14 different fabrics, generally a few fabrics from three to four colorways is most effective.  This quilt ranges from blues at the top to greens, then peaches to deep pinks.

Longarm Quilting

The digital longarm quilting design is Ribbon Curls in Ash colored thread to blend in with all of the fabrics.  I love the swirls swirling across the quilt top, softening the lines of the piecing.
