This quilt reminds me of A&W Rootbeer, so I've named it "Rootbeer Float". This was the first quilt I made when testing my Granny's Square Patch pattern. Maybe you'd agree that it wasn't meant to be the cover quilt!!
The blocks in this quilt are bigger than the blocks in the Granny Square Patch pattern. I was still playing with it when I made this quilt and decided the blocks needed to be smaller for more visual effect.
The backing looks sorta like the stitching on a baseball. This being a donation quilt for a man, I thought it was a great match.
Quilt Stats:
- Pattern: Granny's Square Patch
- Size: 57" x 70"
- Fabric: Kona Cotton Solids
- Batting: 100% cotton
- Backing: Echo by Lotta Jansdotter for Windham.
- Quilting: Allover large meandering stitch in brown polyester thread on Mrs.Singer, my antique 31-15 mounted on a long-arm quilting frame.
- Binding: Kona Cotton Solid, double fold, attached by machine.
- Value: Refreshing as an A&W rootbeer float!
This quilt was made as part of the Hands2Help Charity Quilt Challenge 2016 at Confessions of a Fabric Addict and will be donated to Covered in Love where it will be donated at the East Texas Medical Center.
I'm moving my quilt patterns to their own Etsy shop - Busy Hands Patterns. Please stop by and favorite my new shop!

Very pretty quilt. I am sure it will bring lots of comfort.
Good morning, Myra.....now I like the bigger blocks. And the colour is fantastic! Love the name...
I really like the quilt and the brown quilting. I think these are the perfect shades of orange and brown together.
It's a beautiful quilt, Myra, and you're right, it's just the same colors as A&W Rootbeer! Thanks for participating in H2H this year!!
Thanks for the brown thread tip on the harsh white idea. Does that mean use a color thread of another fabric? or just brown? Love the simplicity, clean lines of your quilt.
That is a beautiful quilt, good job!
I LOVE your quilt and the name of it. It definitely reminds me of A & W and rootbeer, and the wonderful orange drink they have. What a wonderful quilt to donate for H2H. Mine was a bit smaller, because I quilted the wrong one, but it still works! I might have to make a Root Beer Float myself!
Another beautiful quilt. I think the reciever will be very happy with this quilt!! Great job!!
Beautiful quilt! Thanks for the tip about quilting with brown... I never thought about it, but that is a color I have in my collection of thread but I rarely use for fabric... so it's good to know that it works well on a light background like that! Thanks for sharing!!
I love this (and the big blocks), and now I really want to go pour myself a rootbeer! I keep old A & W mugs in the freezer, which says something about my feelings about their rootbeer.
Perfect name for this quilt! I love the way it looks and I'm sure whoever receives it will love it too.
I love how you call this the Root Beer Float quilt! Yes, I DO get a vintage A&W Root Beer vibe! I think it's lovely.
You quilt got here today, Myra. It's gorgeous! Thank you so much for your support!
I love to crochet granny squares so how fun to learn to sew them too!
I like it! A&W was my favorite place to go when I was a kid--Dad loved Coney Tuesday.
It does look like A&W!! I love it! And the Echo was the perfect backing choice :)
