Simplicity Throw Quilt Pattern - a Custom Quilt!

I'm behind at blogging and plan to get caught up over the next few weeks, so stay tuned for news on some new quilts!

This Simplicity Throw quilt was made last year as a custom order for a little girl whose mom had taken her picture on a piece of fabric every month for the first year or so.  As a memory for these precious occasions, the mom had a quilt made with the fabrics, and I got to make it!

This isn't the first time I've made quilts from fabrics used in photoshoots over a baby's first years.  This mom is a friend of the mom I've made two memory quilts for in previous years, so thus I received the referral.  You can see those quilts here and here.

Simplicity Includes all the Sizes

The Simplicity quilt pattern includes all of the sizes - Baby, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King.  The larger sizes have larger blocks to make them go more quickly.  You really didn't want to make over 650 HSTs for a king size, did you?  I didn't think so.  That's why the blocks are bigger in the larger sizes.

Precut Friendly!

Simplicity is a precut-friendly quilt pattern, using charm squares in the smaller sizes and fat quarters or 1/4-yard cuts for the larger sizes.

As you can see by this quilt, using random fabrics that don't really match each other is really effective.  I would never have put that bright gold-yellow in with the other fabrics, but that fabric really brings an extra pop and brings the quilt to life!  And the goal wasn't a matchy-matchy quilt; it was a memory quilt from all of those fun, crazy photoshoots!  ✔✔

Oh That Binding!

When I have a choice, I'll choose a striped, plaid, or check binding every time, so this simple black/white stripe fabric was an easy choice.  It nicely settles the busy-ness of the quilt top and finishes it with a bit of punch, too.  ✔✔

Oh That ♥ Quilting!

The digital quilting design is Valentine by Karlee Porter, perfect for this child's memory quilt!  The thread is natural white, and the quilt was quilted on my Handi Quilter Fusion with ProStitcher.

Oh That Backing!

In order to make this memory quilt even more memorable, the leftover fabric was used on the backing.  It took quite awhile to figure out what to do, but I finally settled on simple rows of each fabric, and it worked perfectly!  The backing is just as fun as the front, and I didn't think I'd ever say that about a pieced backing - I'm just a single fabric backing kinda girl!  :)  But I can sure see some little kiddos enjoying a tea party with their stuffies on this side of the quilt, too!  ✔✔

Triangle Table Runner Quilts | Finished or Not Friday Linky Party!

My Finish is two triangle table runners!  I'm still featuring finishes from last year's 70 quilts.  There just aren't enough Fridays to show them all in one year without doubling some up.  It's a good thing I took the month of December off from quilting and won't have any fresh finishes for a few weeks!

The quilts are quilted with different designs; one is a flame design, the other is diagonal plaid bias.

Batting:  Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 cotton poly

Quilting:  Flames and Diagonal Plaid Bias on Gratitude in white thread.

Custom Lap Size HST Quilt {A Finish!}

My customer's choice of half-square triangles with bright fabrics was perfect!  This quilt is in memory of my customer's daughter who passed away two years ago.  She was a paramedic who loved children, as testified by the fun prints on her scrubs.

This quilt is for my customer's son-in-law who lost his wife, so the backing is a masculine navy blue.

Another quilt in which I remembered to put a label!  I'm so loving my sew-in satin labels!  It just feels special to put my personal mark on a quilt.

• Fabric:  Customer-supplied medical scrubs with Kona White
• Batting:  100% cotton
• Backing:  Riley Blake Cotton Solid in Navy

• Label:  Custom label.
• Value:  Memorable!

Custom Twin Size HST Quilt {Finished!}

This quilt is one of my Quarter 1 Goals for the 2015 Finish Along.  HERE is my original post.

It's HST ♥♥♥ at my house today!  Finished up is a custom order twin half-square triangle quilt.  I have wanted to make a 100% HST quilt for a long time, and this custom order nudged me over the edge to do it!  

I used this method to create 8 half-square triangles at a time.  I'm finding this is a really efficient method, and as long as I pin generously and sew very carefully, the HSTs don't need trimmed other than dog ears - a major time-saver.  I trimmed ZERO of the 264 HSTs in this quilt!   {NO KIDDING!}

Perfectly adorable to the tip of her corners!

My customer chose the backing to match her favorite pink fabric in the quilt top. I used my Moda Bella color chart to match it perfectly.  A row of HSTs were used in a strip across the back for a nice touch.

The binding is the same solid pink as the backing for a nice finishing touch. 

Quilt Stats:

• Pattern:  Half-square triangles
• Size:  Twin 67" x 88" after washing; 70" x 91" before washing.  Shrinkage 3" each direction.
• Quilt Top Fabric:  Customer-supplied prints with Kona White.
• Batting:  80/20 cotton/poly, thin.
• Backing:  Moda Bella Pink with one row of HSTs.
• Quilting:  Allover meandering in white thread on Mrs.Singer, my antique 31-15 mounted on a long-arm quilting frame.
• Binding:  Double fold, attached by machine in Moda Bella Pink.
• Value:  Absolutely adorable!

Mrs.Hexie ... Patchwork Prism Quilt Finished!

Mrs.Hexie ... my interpretation of the Patchwork Prisms Quilt pattern by Anna Marie Horner for Janome.  Made completely from my stash {yeah!} and almost entirely with my current ♥ Annie's Farm Stand by Holly Holderman for Lakehouse Fabrics ... a few other fabrics were used to fill in here and there.  I ♥ the mix of florals, dots, stripes, plaids, and checks.  You'd think 40 AFS fabrics would have been enough, but they weren't!

This is the largest quilt in which I have used fusible batting, and it worked fabulously without shifting even with the extensive handling of the quilt as I quilted.  ♥ fusible batting!  I did straight-line quilting along the inner and outer edges of the triangles and some special quilting to highlight the small hexagons.  ♥ that walking foot on my old Bernina 830!  The fabrics were not prewashed, and I ♥ the way the quilt crinkled up when it was washed!

The all-time bestest use of a clothesline is to photograph quilts!

• Pattern:  Patchwork Prisms by Anna Marie Horner for Janome.
• Size:  68" x 71", full pattern size.
• Fabric:  Mostly Annie's Farm Stand by Holly Holderman for Lakehouse Fabrics with a few other treasures to fill in.
• Batting:  Hobbs Fusible batting 80/20.
• Backing:  Black with tiny white dots.
• Binding:  Black with tiny white dots, double fold, attached completely by machine for durability with perfectly mitered 45-degree corners.
• Value:  Wrap-me-up cozy!
