Introducing Amish Urban Churn Dash

... another rainbow finish!

I thought I'd keep it, but I don't have a place for it, and she really needs a place to shine!

All Kona fabrics were from my stash except the backing.

Urban Churn Dash Sew-Along {Quilt Top Assembled!} + A Sale!

My Urban Churn Dash quilt top is complete!  I omitted the sashing between the blocks to create the sub pattern where the four colors meet.  I added a narrow black border to frame it nicely.  Those blocks are whopping big, and the quilt top measures 76" square.  

I plan to quilt this on my long-arm machine next month after I finish the custom king size Sparkler quilt in progress and my daughter's queen size Grand Illusion quilt.  I have not decided on backing for this quilt yet.  I'd like to use the stash but nothing is jumping out at me saying "pick me!"

Urban Churn Dash Sew-Along {Finishing the Blocks}

This week's step in the Urban Churn Dash Sew-Along is making the corner half-square triangles and assembling the blocks.  I've completed my nine blocks and absolutely adore them!  I very much like the way they are laid out, but I will rearrange them in rainbow order to see if I like that better.

I LOVE RAINBOWS!

The blocks measure 24-1/2" square, so the quilt top will measure 72" square when the blocks are sewn together.  I plan on making the quilt bigger using the 56 HSTs that were leftover from the flying geese blocks.  I'm not sure just what the layout will be, but my expert quilting helper {my 13 year-old daughter} will be sure to help me figure it out. 

I had been planning on listing this quilt in my Etsy shop until I saw it on the design wall - this is a keeper for sure and will be the next quilt on my living room wall.  I will then have rainbows on four out of five beds in the house as well as the living room!  And there is no pink in it!  DH's requirement is no pink in the living room!

And here's the huge living room wall of which I'm speaking.  It's so big that it begs for a large quilt - anything else would look very out of sorts unless it was very big or a large assortment of smaller items.  For perspective, the quilt rack is 85" - that's over 7'.

Urban Churn Dash Sew-Along {Flying Geese and 4-Patch Blocks}

Sewing along with the Churn Dash Sew-Along, I've completed the flying geese and 4-patch blocks.  Easy peasy!  I love rainbows and bold colors with black, so my quilt will have an Amish look to it.

There are nine 4-patch blocks and 36 flying geese blocks in all.  The Sew-Along directions say to discard the corners of the flying geese after pressing and trimming the triangles, but since the pieces are so big, I sewed an extra seam and created bonus half-square triangles - that's 72 HSTs that measure somewhere around 4"!  I haven't pressed and measured them yet.  I just might use them in the border to make the quilt bigger.

Urban Churn Dash Sew-Along {Fabric Pull + Cutting}

Here's my fabric pull for the Churn Dash Sew-Along.  My colors are quite a bit different than the sample quilt in the Sew-Along with black as my background and all nine blocks completely different rather than the two colorways for blocks that the sample quilt has.  I simply LOVE rainbows!

I went with deeper, fuller colors of the rainbow to more closely resemble an authentic Amish quilt.  Each block has two colors, and below I've paired them together.

Today I cut the block fabrics.  I've yet to cut the black background.  The large colored squares are 8-7/8" and the smaller squares are 4-1/2".  After cutting the first color, I realized it was better use of the fabric if I cut the WOF strip 9" wide rather than 8-7/8" wide in order to accommodate the 4.5" squares.  Then it was a simple cut to make the 8-7/8" square from the 9".
