One Fine Day Picket Fence Throw Quilt

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

Today I'm sharing another peek at a Picket Fence quilt one of my sewists made last year.  This popular quilt is sewn up with One Fine Day by Bonnie and Camille.  This fabric collection looks so nice and really sparkles against the navy blue background.

Picket Fence is the second pattern I wrote back in 2015, and it's still super popular today.  As a side note, pattern number 93 is in the works as we speak, phew!

This is the original pieced picket block pattern, and there are several more in the Busy Hands Quilts line.  Other patterns that use blocks similar to this are Mini Picket FenceHome Awaits, and Family Ties.

The Picket Fence quilt pattern is available in the Busy Hands Quilts shop.

All the Sizes and Two Layout Options Included

The Picket Fence quilt pattern includes seven sizes - Baby, Square Throw, Rectangular Throw, Twin, Square Queen, Rectangular Queen, and King.  You're covered for any size you need!

Also included are two layout options - one with pieced blocks alternating horizontally and vertically which creates a framed look to the large blocks, and the second layout option is all of the blocks placed vertically (or you could place them all horizontally, as well).  The vertical layout was discovered by one of you a number of years ago, and integrated into a revision of the pattern.

Precut Friendly Pattern

One Fine Day is a lovely collection of large and small florals, checks, geometrics, and tone-on-tones in red, pink, squa, navy, apple green, and orange.  Nested against a navy blue background, the prints really sparkle!

Picket Fence is a layer cake friendly quilt pattern for all sizes up to Twin.  The pieced blocks are strip pieced from the layer cake squares.  In the Queen and King sizes, jelly roll strips are added to a layer cake for more efficient piecing.

This pattern is also fat quarter friendly!

You won't be sewing together individual squares with Picket Fence!

It's so easy to use your stash for this pattern, too.

Longarm Machine Quilting

This Picket Fence quilt is quilted with a spiral design in navy thread on my HandiQuilter Fusion with Pro-Stitcher.

The binding is a red and pink diagonal stripe fabric from the One Fine Day collection.

The Picket Fence quilt pattern is quick and easy and perfect for beginners.  You'll dip your toes into strip piecing and learn a lot with this simple, striking quilt pattern.  And you'll get to use your favorite layer cake squares, to boot!

The Picket Fence quilt pattern is available in the Busy Hands Quilts shop.

Picket Fence Rectangle Throw Quilt in One Fine Day by Bonnie and Camille!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

Today I'm sharing another quilt that was finished last year and didn't make it on the blog!

This is Picket Fence in the vertical layout, one of two layout options included in the quilt pattern.  The other layout in the pattern is every other row of pieced blocks turned, which changes the look of the quilt completely.

Picket Fence uses precut layer cakes in the smaller sizes and precut layer cakes and jelly rolls in the Queen and King sizes; and specific instructions are given on how to use each type of precut.

The Picket Fence quilt pattern is available in the Busy Hands Quilts shop.

The Picket Fence Quilt Pattern Features

Do you have fabrics that you love so much that you find it impossible to cut into small pieces?  This pattern is perfect for those fabrics.  Use your favorites for the large blocks and use your less favorite fabrics in the pieced blocks.  A variety of hues in the pieced blocks makes them sparkle more.

Picket Fence includes 7 sizes which pretty much has you covered for any project!  I ♥ to spoil you with as many sizes as possible in my patterns (and I also love to do the math)!

  • Baby
  • Square Throw
  • Rectangular Throw
  • Twin
  • Square Queen
  • Rectangular Queen
  • King
This quilt pattern is quick and easy with strip piecing.  Yep, even layer cakes can be used for strip piecing!

Strip Piecing is sewing strips together to create a "strip set", pressing the seams a certain way, and then sub-cutting "segments" from the strip set, and then re-sewing the segments with other segments or strips to create a quilt block.  It is important in strip piecing that an accurate 1/4" seam be used so the strip sets end up the correct height.

Oh, Those Fabrics!

Those beautiful fabrics are Sunday Stroll by Bonnie and Camille for Moda Fabrics.  Just so sweet with the large and small florals, plaids, ditties, and tone-on-tones in scrumptious red, pink, aqua, apple green, orange, and navy.

You can find Sunday Stroll right here.

For a different look, the quilt pictured below is turned the opposite way on the bed, with the pieced blocks placed horizontally.

Longarm Quilting

This quilt is quilted in a swirling design in navy thread on my HandiQuilter Fusion with ProStitcher.

This quilt top was made by Kare, one of my professional sewists.

Mini Picket Fence Quilted Table Runners and Toppers!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

Mini Picket Fence is a smaller version of my full-size Picket Fence layer cake quilt pattern which has been super popular since its release several years ago.  The mini version uses charm packs to create fun little picket fence blocks, and the pattern includes 4 sizes - Small Topper, Small Runner, Large Topper, and Large Runner.  That's two rectangular sizes and two square sizes.  You know I want to make my patterns worth buying, so I give you loads of size options every time.

Did you know that those tiny blocks are strip pieced?!?  If you know me, you know I am a strip piecer at heart, and I would never have you cut tiny little squares and then piece them back together if it could in any way be avoided.  No sirree.  There are way too many quilts that need sewn to take up time with such silliness.  :)

This week I completed three Mini Picket Fence quilts - a Small Topper, Small Runner, and Large Runner.  I quilted them at the same time on one piece of backing on my longarm.  Attaching quilts to the rails takes a bit of time, so using one piece of backing for all three definitely sped up the process.

First the Large Runner was quilted with Canna (that's the one pictured above).  The inside layer on this one is heat-resistant batting for use on my dining room table (yes!  I'm keeping it!).  I love heat-resistant batting in table runners so I don't have to use hot pads under hot dishes/pans.

Then I quilted the Small Runner in Belly Bop, a rounded square design that works so well for a modern look.  This quilt will be for sale when I get more pictures of it.

Then the Small Topper was quilted with hearts, shown below.  I am also keeping this one; it will be displayed on the table in front of the sofa.  Yes, it's for me!  Another thing to know about me is that I keep very few quilts that I make, and yes, I do have quilts all over my house!  Having made 109 quilts in the past two years, there is no way I can keep them all.

When I designed Picket Fence, I only envisioned it with the blocks turned to create the design as you see in the Small Topper below.  When I saw it popping up on social media with the blocks all turned one direction, I was immediately smitten and so grateful for your eyes that saw it differently than I did.  So the quilt above reflects this, and I'm tickled with it.  :)

Quilt Stats:
Pattern:  Mini Picket Fence, available right here.
Size:  Top quilt 22" x 67", middle quilt 13" x 54", bottom quilt 27" square.
Batting:  Top quilt heat-resistant batting from JoAnn, other quilts Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 cotton/poly
Backing:  A floral print from the Flower Shoppe II collection
Quilting:  As noted above.

The small runner will be for sale in my shop very soon.  Click here to see it.
