Custom Quilted Pillow Shams | Finished {or Not!} Friday Linky Party!

My project to share is two custom quilted pillow shams made to coordinate with a queen size quilt that sold in my quilt shop.

Below is the quilt the pillow shams coordinate with.  The front of the shams is a mini quilt, complete with batting and backing, and the reverse side has an envelope opening, with an extra wide binding.  Once again, I used my favorite quilt book to create the shams.  Click here to read more about that book.  I ♥ this book and have used it more than any other quilting book, hands down.

Bloomin Quilt-As-You-Go Pillow in Island Batiks!

May's challenge for Island Batik Ambassadors is a pillow.  I made a quilt-as-you-go Bloomin' pillow.

You will find the Bloomin' QAYG Pillow Tutorial over here.  The backing is a simple envelope enclosure in a light blue Basic Foundation.  I enjoyed the process very much and will likely use it again with scraps.  Having a longarm machine makes it nearly impossible for me to make a large quilt in the QAYG method, but I can see making pillows, placemats, or table runners in this manner.

As an Island Batik Ambassador, I am provided fabric for projects.  This fabric is from a layer cake of Island Batik Bursting Blooms from my stash.

Flower Sugar Quilted Pillows!  Cute as can be at 12".  Perfect for a shelf, a night stand, or in a pile on the bed.  They're ready to go with inserts included!

I am currently finishing projects on my cutting table.  These pillow covers have been there for over a year.  All they needed was the front sewn to the back and the inside seam serged.  Seriously.  Finished.  5 of them, to boot!  {I hear you clapping!!}

Finished or Not Friday {a Linky Party!} + Boundless Beauty Pillow Sham

Welcome to Finished or Not Friday where you can share your finished {or not} projects!

My Finish is a pillow sham to match the cover quilt for my new pattern - Boundless Beauty!  It's super sweet in Flower Sugar!  I used leftover bricks from the quilt, a splash of white, and added a matching red/white check binding.

Here's the quilt again, just for fun!  The pattern is jelly roll friendly for traditional piecing and scraps or yardage friendly for strip piecing.  This quilt is the twin size.  The instructions include 5 sizes from baby to king, with traditional piecing as well as strip piecing to make the process much faster.

Key to My Heart Pillow Sham {a Finish!}

Hot off the machine today is a quilted pillow sham made from triangle corners clipped from the Key to My Heart twin quilt I made to test the pattern.  The quilt was snatched up within hours of listing it in my Etsy shop, and my customer was interested in a matching pillow sham.  The triangles could be laid out numerous ways, but this was my favorite.

As usual, I used the book Shams With Style to calculate the correct size of the pillow sham.  I ♥ this book and use it regularly!

Here is the original Key to My Heart quilt.

The pattern Key to My Heart is available for purchase in my Craftsy shop!  The pattern gives instructions for seven different sizes and is layer cake and yardage friendly!

Sweet Flower Sugar Quilted Pillow

Back in October, Jera at Quilting in the Rain hosted a Quilt-As-You-Go QAL, and I loved the idea so I jumped in and began making blocks with my super yummy Flower Sugar stash.  After I finished 10 blocks, I set the project aside and decided that someday I would make them into pillow covers rather than continuing on to make an entire quilt.  I'm not too sure about the QAYG process. I love the idea but not so much the doing.  And that's okay.  We can be different and still be friends, can't we?

Ta-da!  I have completed the first pillow cover!

Simply Happy Lap Quilt {Finished!}

This quilt is one of my Quarter 1 Goals for the 2015 Finish Along.  HERE is my original post.

This Simply Happy quilt is finished!  

The quilting is in organic wavy lines, which Mrs.Singer neatly completed after I figured out she can only stitch forward, which is right to left for her.  This quilt was begun in September, quilted in November, quilting ripped and completed in January!  I ripped while listening to A Patriot's History of the United States with my son for US History class.

The backing is a green from the Simply Style line and a large polka dot on dark gray.

I love how the organic wavy quilting shows in this picture.  This is the first time I've used the word "organic" regarding my quilting!  This picture shows a lot of eggplant which overall is not an accurate picture.

This picture shows more of a balance of what's in the quilt but not the mustard - a little of aqua, navy, gray, green, eggplant, rose, and white.

I also made a coordinating pillow sham out of the leftover blocks!  It's a standard-size pillow sham, perfect for a sofa or bed.

Passing on the Crafting Gene - Millie and I Make Pillow Covers!

Passing on the Crafting Gene is a new series here at Busy Hands Quilts.  Sometimes it is too easy to let moments, days, months, no, it's years slip by without taking time to share with our kids the skills we have.  It's called living intentionally - making a sincere effort to do what we wished we had spent more time on when we're old and looking back at our life.  I am aiming to do that more.  For me that means scheduling in a set time every week when Millie and I do something crafty together.  Friday afternoons work well for us because it is our "light" homeschooling day since we have homeschool soccer in the late morning, and all school work is done before we go.  This is what we made last week.
Isn't she just precious?  And, yes, in case you're wondering, she is taller than me by a whopping three inches!!!  Did you know she is only 12?
That delicious lime green is on two of her bedroom walls.  It is so refreshing!
Her pillow is made from fabric she collected for her rainbow room.  She has the suspicious gene of being addicted to fabric {gasp!} and I now hear myself saying, "You'll need to buy that with your own money, honey!"  She is so excited to have completed a project from her fabric stash.  
My hope is that she will become familiar with and addicted to the feeling of completing projects and make this a habit in her life, rather than beginning projects and setting them aside unfinished. Completing projects has always been a hardship for me, and I have only learned to persevere to the end in very recent years.  So blogger friend, if you don't know how to quilt a quilt, or bind a quilt ... just do it, get off the computer, jump in and learn it and finish those quilt tops you have begun!  It is such a confidence booster! My pillow cover is Keep On and Quilt On by Timeless Treasures.  It was a "couldn't resist" purchase this fall at a local quilt shop sale, and I actually had a plan for it when I bought it, which I cannot say about many fabric purchases.  I used fusible fleece to give mine more stability since I intend to use it as a seat cushion in my sewing room.
And the quilt on which the pillows are resting is Millie's Rainbow Wave Quilt which I made earlier this year. Pillow Stats:

Quilted Dog Bed for Lily!

Miss Lily is one spoiled dog with her new quilted dog bed!  I could hardly stomach the price on a big dog bed, so I decided to make one myself.  The brilliant idea to use a 27" square pillow form came to me when I found them 50% off at JoAnn's.
I let one of the boys pick any fabric from the stash!   Lily seems to like it! For the "other" side {is it the front or the back?}, I used a leftover quilt top that I had made last winter and couldn't figure out what to do with.  I made this quilt top using the Jelly Roll Race! tutorial by the Missouri Star Quilt Co on YouTube.  The tutorial is great, it looked great in the fabrics they were using, but not so much with my mini-dot fabric strips, so the quilt top got stuffed away in the fabric closet. To make the dog bed more durable, both sides are quilted with batting and backing and then assembled in traditional pillow cover style with an envelope opening, which is bound like a quilt rather than folded edges. Pillow Stats:  28.5" square on a 27" square pillow form.  This allows room for shrinkage when washed.
