Grandpa's Barn Quilted Wall Hanging in Lauren!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

Today I'm sharing a Grandpa's Barn quilt in the Baby size, but I'll call it the Wall Hanging size since it's not made with fabrics suited for a baby!

I recently finished a batch of small quilts to be displayed in my local quilt shop, Tangled Threads.  This is one of the quilts.

Those Pretty Fabrics!

My Grandpa's Barn quilt pattern was selected to highlight a really pretty fabric collection called Lauren.  The collection includes mauves, greens, browns, and tans in florals, paisleys, and tone-on-tones.  The Lauren jelly roll is available right here.  The background fabric is an ivory tone-on-tone from my stash.

The Grandpa's Barn Quilt Pattern

Grandpa's Barn includes some great features:
  • Precut friendly - jelly roll strips welcome!
  • All the sizes - 5 in all - Baby, Throw, Twin, Queen, and King.
  • Strip piecing
  • Lots of diagrams and text so it's very understandable

Longarm Quilting

This Grandpa's Barn quilt was quilted with Feathered Roses, a digital design, on my HandiQuilter Fusion with ProStitcher in tan thread. The quilting is a bit darker than the background fabric so it really stands out across the quilt top.

Sweet Caroline Throw Size Quilt Kit!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

Sweet Caroline has been kitted by Connecting Threads in the Throw size.  This is the Wild Crimson fabric collection, focusing on the blue fabrics in the collection instead of the reds and tans.

The pattern gives exact fabric placement to create the three darker squares in the middle of the 25-patch blocks.  They alternate direction every other block to create a subtle secondary design.

Sweet Caroline is a yardage-friendly quilt pattern that uses strip piecing to go together quickly.

TIP:  Be sure your strip sets are the correct height so the blocks fit together as expected.  It's a great idea to check seam allowances by making test strip sets before sewing all of the strips sets.  In addition to presser foot differences (my 1/4" foot is not accurate!), fabric strips can vary up to 1/4" in width, depending on how they're cut, and checking strip set height can save a lot of frustration later on.

To help with keeping the correct seam allowance on my machine, I use a special tape on my machine/table.  This tape also allows me to sew diagonal seams without drawing lines on the back of every square.  It's a win-win!

Checkout the tape right here.

I haven't shown you Sweet Caroline yet because I haven't had time to edit the pictures of the quilt I made and the one made by a sewist.  That's all they're waiting for!  I promise I'll show you them soon.  We're building a house on our property for my husband's dad and his wife, so I am often working on that instead of the ins and outs of my quilting business.  I've continued designing and writing patterns to meet deadlines, but getting quilts made, pictures taken, and other behind-the-scenes marketing done have taken a backseat for now.
The quilt pattern is also available without the quilt kit if you'd like to use your stash and color scheme.

Family Ties has been kitted by Connecting Threads in the beautiful Kindred Blossoms fabric collection!  This is the Throw size.

I mentioned in a previous post that I am on a kick using darker fabrics as the background, and this quilt is no exception.  This is a deep indigo.

Family Ties Quilt Pattern in 6 Sizes from Lap to King!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

Family Ties is a jelly roll friendly quilt pattern that is strip pieced for a quick finish!  No sewing individual squares together, although you could if you wanted to.

Lovely spring weather means that quilts can be photographed on the clothesline again!  There is nothing better than natural light for photos, but it definitely is touch and go - it can't be too gray, can't be too bright, can't be windy, can't be rainy.  Oh my, a girl nearly gives up waiting for the perfect time!

To me, the strips of squares represent the ties of family - each unique, different, some facing a different direction, but yet all tied together in some way.  I have been enjoying Zoom calls every Saturday afternoon for the last month with my family - my parents, sisters, brother, spouses, and some of our nieces and nephews.  I don't live by any of them and only see them a handful of times during the year, so this is a real treat.  My sisters and I often continue the call for another hour after everyone else has signed off.  I am hoping they're all on board to continue them at least a couple of times a month after #quarantine has passed.  That's Family Ties!

You know I love strip piecing, right?!?  This quilt is definitely strip pieced - you'll cut strips or use a precut jelly roll, then sew strips together and cut segments and then sew the segments back together to create blocks.  The key to strip piecing is an accurate seam allowance so the strip set is the correct height; if the strip set is too tall or too short, the units will not fit together very well when pieced into blocks, and then the blocks won't fit together well when they are joined.  It's a snowball effect that doesn't get better at the next step.  Strip piecing begins with accurate strip width and then with an accurate 1/4" seam allowance.  Here is a video tutorial if you're interested.

I've also noticed that thread weight makes a big difference in accurate piecing.  I used to use 40-wt thread because that is what my longarm machine uses, and it was easy to just use the same thread.  That is until I received a huge spool of Aurifil 50-wt in 2018 as an Island Batik Ambassador.  Game changer!  That 50-wt thread took the accuracy of my piecing to a whole new level!  Now I use  Superior So Fine polyester thread, available right here.  I prefer polyester because there it runs cleaner with less fuzzies.

Quilting is a modern design called Belly Bop in bright blue thread.  :)  I rarely use colored threads for quilting and was so happy to be able to in this quilt.

The backing is a fabric I found at my local quilt shop.  It's Cherry Lemonade from In The Beginning fabrics.

Autumn Roads Quilt is Finished!

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

Update:  This item has sold!!

The Autumn Roads quilt is finished!  These colors are not usually what I sew with, but they have grown on me, and I really like how the quilt turned out.  If I didn't need the money to purchase homeschooling materials for next year, I'd keep it for myself or give it to my mom.  We're still recovering from Mr. Hearts being out of work for almost a year and then me losing my medical transcription account last fall.

You can find this quilt for sale at Etsy.  Enter the coupon code BLOGFREESHIP at checkout for free shipping on any item in my store (USA addresses only), for a limited time only!

If you like this quilt design but would like it in different colors or a different size (such as a wall hanging), please contact me, and I'll see what I can do for you!

Autumn Roads Quilt Top

This post may contain affiliate links. Thank you for your support!

The quilt I have named Autumn Roads quilt top is finished and waiting for the quilter to quilt it!  Oh yes, that would be me!  I'm sew thankful for my long-arm quilting machine!  I have wanted one for years, and it is interesting to note that it was provided during this year of unemployment!

These colors were a stretch out of my comfort zone, and I am pleased at how the top turned out.  She is approximately twin sized and will be listed for sale on Etsy and eBay when completed.  Stop back for a picture of the finished product!

Hmm, should I tell you what Mr. Hearts asked when he saw this fabric?  He said, "You didn't pay money for that, did you?"  I did NOT slap him, but he did get the evil eye.
